My business failed for the first two years!

When I started my business 9 years ago we had an amazing product (I say so myself!)

But I just knew in my gut this idea could change lives.

But I had no idea how to start a business, turns out they don’t teach that at business school.

So I did what everyone else was doing. I joined endless webinars and masterclasses on Instagram, sales, pitching, and marketing.

But I was so overwhelmed by the advice! I remember being told in a sales workshop to set myself a goal of cold messaging 50 people every day

I remember staring at my laptop thinking… surely building a venture is not supposed to feel this miserable?

And worst of all? None of it sounded like me!

A marketing workshop said, “you must post on Instagram at 10am and you will be successful”.

The strange thing was, lots of these people running the workshops hadn’t run a business themselves!

We exhausted ourselves for 2 years following all this advice and feeling really icky about it.

But a year later we had way too many sales

Just one year later, I was sitting in a huge warehouse surrounded by towers of boxes, thinking how on earth did this happen?

We had already outgrown our first two spaces.

We had a team of 13, but it still wasn't enough.

Our warehouse was packed to the brim.

People finally understood the value emotionally instead of us desperately trying to explain it logically.

And opportunities just seemed to find us! We won a nationwide TV advert, more funding than we could ever have expected.

Now pitching, marketing, and sales were the easy part of the company!

That business was Social Stories Club, still going strong!

So what changed?

I discovered something no-one had ever taught me.

I found a small section in a psychology textbook about storytelling and the neuroscience behind it.

You don’t learn in school about how your brain is wired for story!

I became obsessed with learning how narrative affects decisions, trust, memory, and action.

It felt so authentic, but also made so much sense. When we communicate through story the brain lights up, dopamine and other hormones are produced. People become emotionally engaged. They can’t help it, our brain is wired that way.

How did no one tell me that stories were 22 times more memorable than facts alone and that conversion rates can massively increase through story?

So I rebuilt our pitch deck around these principles. This is the same pitch deck we had pitched for millions in funding and been rejected.

But it’s not just about telling “our story”! It’s more strategic than that.

  • Making funders the hero

  • Helping people feel the opportunity, not just understand it, and take them on an emotional journey.

We were using story across all our sales and marketing and we quickly expanded to a team of 13 people!
